Gilbert Lee "Skip" Short

Gilbert Lee “Skip” Short, 91 of Higginsville, Missouri passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Meyer Care Center in Higginsville. Skip, as he was most commonly known, was born Sunday, August 28, 1932 in Higginsville to the late Fred Short and the late Edna (Goring) Short. Skip was a graduate of Higginsville High School. In 1952, he married Ruth (Boswell) Short. Shortly after marriage Skip entered the US Army where he obtained the rank of Corporal before he was honorably discharged. After the Army, Skip and Ruth lived in the Higginsville and Lexington areas. Skip was most known for owning/operating several full service stations around town, as a business owner he employed numerous local people and changed the lives of many. After retirement, he worked part-time at Kleinschmidt's just so he could stay active and socialize with all their patrons. Skip also enjoyed eating lunch almost daily at Generations Cafe so he could spend time with friends and family. Skip spent his entire life working and being a part of the Higginsville community. His smile and charming personality will forever be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edna Short; wife, Ruth; two daughters, Sheryl Short and Tina Short. Surviving are his sons, Greg (Julie) Short of Higginsville, , Tim (Charlene) Short of Higginsville, Doug (Tiffany) Short of Independence, MO; brother, Henry (Lee) Short; two sisters, Diane (Bob) Payne, Sylvia (Jim) Williams; nine grandchildren; Brandy Kinne, Greighton (Tabitha) Short, Megan (Brodie) Leap, Brandi (Joey) Lile, Matt Long, Michael Short, Katelyn (Cole) Brackman, Zachary (Jamie) Short, Sarah Short; and eleven great-grandchildren, Memphis Kinne, Gabriel Short, Kennedy Short, Regan Wood, Owen Wood, Adeline Leap, Dayton Swearngin, Miles Swearngin, Lainey Lile, Noelle Long, and Colson Brackman. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Salem United Church of Christ 1500 N. Main St. Higginsville, Missouri. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastor Tim Biesemeyer officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in the City Cemetery. Casket bearers: Memphis Kinne, Dayton Swearingin, Miles Swearngin, Gabriel Short, Michael Short and Zachary Short. Honorary casket bearers: Greighton Short, Matt Long, Owen Wood, and Colson Brackman.
