Hazel Lee Armstrong

Hazel Lee (Berrier) Armstrong, age 95 of Higginsville, Missouri passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011 at Meyer Care Center. She was born Saturday, October 30, 1915 at the family farm near Stet, Missouri to Harry H. & Julia S. (Hawkins) Berrier. She married Albert Franklin Armstrong (who was serving in the U.S. Navy) on November 22, 1945. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1978. Hazel Lee was a 1933 graduate of Stet High School. She attended Warrensburg Missouri State Teachers College & Southern Illinois State Teachers College in Carbondale, Illinois. She taught in the rural one-room schools of Ray & Carroll counties for six years & first grade in Marceline, Missouri for four years. She also substituted at Stet School for 15 years. Hazel Lee & her husband, Frank. lived in McCloud, California for six years after their marriage where their two oldest sons were born. They returned to live on the family farm in 1951 when her parents retired. Her third & youngest son stayed on the farm when Hazel Lee later moved to John Knox Village East in Higginsville on November 3, 1979. She was an immersed believer in Christ & a faithful, active member of Richmond Christian Chapel for many years. She was a loving Sunday School teacher to three & four year olds for 14 years. Hazel Lee did untold hours of volunteer work at Meyer Care Center, the Foster Grandparent Program & for Lafayette County R.S.V.P. where she received the "Heart of Gold" award. She tutored several students & enjoyed watching their progress. She enjoyed spending time with all her friends at John Knox & especially loved the Quilting Club & playing cards. Hazel Lee had a servant's heart, always speaking kindly of everyone & putting others before herself. She loved her family dearly. She is survived by two sons, Wayne (Vicki) of Independence, Missouri, Dan (Lisa) of Norborne, Missouri; two grandchildren, Sara Armstrong of Warrensburg, & Mark Armstrong of Carrollton, Missouri. She also leaves her younger brother, Dr. Harry (Lina) Berrier of Columbia, Missouri & many loving nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Arthur E. & Jewell H. Berrier & her oldest son, Jared D. Armstrong in 2008. Hazel Lee gave the Gift of Body for scientific purposes to the University of Missouri, Columbia. A Memorial service will be held Friday, May 27, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Richmond Christian Chapel, Richmond, Missouri with Dave Donaldson & Mark Berrier officiating.
