Eugene "Gene" Shier

Eugene "Gene" Shier, age 81 of Higginsville, Missouri died on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at his home in Higginsville. Born Wednesday, June 28, 1933 in Mayview, Missouri, he was the son of the late Alfred Willard Shier and the late Elberta (Stockton) Shier. He and Lillie Bernice Maycock were united in marriage November 20, 1955. Gene served in the Army from 1953 until 1955 ranking Corporal and was a Veteran of Korea. He worked as a self-employed farmer until his retirement in 2004. He lived in the Mayview, Missouri and Higginsville areas all of his life and also served as Lafayette Co. Johnson Grass & Thistle Control Officer for 20 years, until 2010. A member of Central Christian Church in Higginsville, he was a lifetime member of the Corder VFW and Higginsville American Legion Post #223, a 50+ year member of Knights of Pythias in Odessa, Missouri; and a member of the Knob Noster AMVets. Preceding him in death are two brothers, Robert & R.J. Shier; and three sisters, Eleta Eichhorn, Elizabeth Haley and Martha Ann Buttrum. Surviving are his wife, Lillie Bernice Shier of the home in Higginsville; one son, Bill (Michelle) Shier of Higginsville; two daughters, Patricia (David) Hayes and Cynthia (Larry) Morris both of Higginsville; one brother, Lawrence (Louise) Shier of Mayview, Missouri; two sisters, Josephine McCulloch of Higginsville and Lois (Buddy) Heiple of Independence, Missouri; 9 grandchildren, Ryun (Megan) Morris, Austin Morris, Ross Shier, Shelby Shier, Zoey Shier, Jeremy (Cassie) Hayes, Zachary Hayes, Marcus Hayes, Billy (Kristy) Wilson; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah Hayes and Haylee Hayes. A Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 8, 2014 at the Central Christian Church, 16 W. 20th St. Higginsville with Pastor Matt Limback officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Cemetery, The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, at Hoefer Funeral Home, 1600 Main St. Higginsville. The Family suggests Memorials to the Lafayette County Cancer Coalition or the Dover Cemetery Fund. Pallbearers are Jerry Shier, Gabe Maycock, Gary McCulloch, Robert Lee Shier, Tom Shier, Donnie Haley. Honorary pallbearers are "Grandchildren" and "Coffee Club".
